The objective of the school counseling program at Nutley High School is to promote and enhance the learning process. Programs are designed to meet the individual needs of students and enable them to derive maximum benefit from the high school experience. Career and academic planning are critical components of the Guidance Department’s services. Counselors strive to guide students at their different stages of development, addressing academic, personal, and social growth.
SCHEDULING
Counselors meet individually with every student to discuss course selections each year. At this time, ability, interests, and post-secondary plans are carefully considered in the preparation of schedules. Parents should review the student’s choices and return the selection form with a signature.
CONFERENCES
Parents are encouraged to meet with counselors whenever needed. Students should see counselors before and after school, during lunch, or with the permission of a teacher.
COLLEGE/CAREER PLANNING
During the junior year, parents should make an appointment with their child’s counselor. This meeting is intended to assist juniors in understanding the decision-making process as it relates to post-secondary plans such as college admission, vocational/technical training, military services, or employment.
INFORMATION SESSIONS
Consistent with our philosophy of supporting the academic program, the Guidance Department schedules information sessions for students and parents. They include, but are not limited to, Freshman Orientation, Freshman Parent Information Session, Junior College Admission Seminar, Financial Aid Workshop, and College and Career Fair. Parents are encouraged to make appointments with counselors to address individual needs.
GUIDANCE GAZETTE
The Nutley High School Guidance Department publishes a newsletter five times a year.
