Sophomore Speech Guidelines

  1. Organization
    1. Select sub-topics
    2. Assume audience knows nothing about topic
  1. Sources—minimum of 5
    1. Hard copy sources—minimum of three
      1. Books
      2. Encyclopedia (only one)
      3. Magazine and newspaper articles (in print or via electronic databases)
    2. Web sites
      1. Web sites with .edu or .org are pre-approved
      2. Additional sites must be approved by the teacher

 

  1. Note cards
    1. Record all notes on 4 x 6 index cards
      1. Facts, statistics, information, etc.
      2. No complete sentences- word phrases only

Outline

Two Formats
      1. Full outline (typed)
      2. Condensed outline (written on maximum of 10 note cards)
    1. Outlining Rules
      1. Never have an “A” or “a” without a “B” or “b”
      2. Never have a “I” or “1” without a “II” or “2”
      3. Use Harvard Topic Outline format
      4. Include every fact and idea that will be in your speech in your outline
  1. Introduction and Conclusion
    1. Write in prose form
    2. Include as the first and last item on the outline
    3. Capture the attention of your audience
      1. A striking statement/statistic
      2. A pondering question
      3. A startling fact
    4. Develop ideas logically
  2. Bibliography
    1. Include all sources (alphabetized by authors’ last names)
    2. Must be typed
    3. See attached samples for correct formatting
