This spring, physical education classes will be closing the year out with some of the most
exciting and memorable classes of the year. The parachute provides a wide range of
cooperative group games and activities enjoyed by all. It is a true sign that the snow and cold weather is gone and the warm weather of spring is here to stay; not to mention the end of the school year is on the horizon.
One of my favorite lessons is our tug of war activity; or as we like to say, our "Life is
Hard" lesson. The parallels between the tug of war and life is unlike any other that we
do. For example, we talk about the other tug of war team will physically try to pull us in the wrong direction. Peer pressure also represents the idea of being pulled in the wrong direction. Children discuss the difficulty to resist and avoid, but how they must recognize the situation, while identifying those peer's who represent "false friends". Surrounding themselves with "true friends". Also discussed is the idea of falling down during the tug of war, which parallels failing in life activities (ie. academics or sports) only to get right back up and keep pulling (working) in the right direction.
Our 5th and 6th grade classes are also completing our Olympic Trials for competition
during the Junior Olympics this June.
On a life fitness note, our entire school population has recently finished our "Jump for
Heart" field day. Our students raised money and participated throughout the day in
activities to raise awareness for the American Heart Associations campaign to help fight
heart disease. Over the course of the last several years Lincoln School students have raised thousands of dollars for this great cause. Hats off to our students for a job well done!
